THE LOVEBIRDS
Michael Showalter's odd romantic comedy/crime thriller is a bizarre, tonally inconsistent film that doesn't land all its punches. However, that being said, Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae are a delight to watch and the movie works best when it's just the two of them, riffing off one another.
Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani play a couple, who after four years of dating, decide to call it quits on their way to a party. They unfortunately hit a cyclist and meet Mustache, a hitman played Paul Sparks, and hijinks ensue.
What follows is less of a coherent plot, and more of a series of vignettes that lead to a weaker conclusion. Fortunately for Showalter, the film is held up by its charismatic leads.
Rae and Nanjiani shine as the comedic leads are worth the price of admission. Their chemistry and comedic chops make me wish that the film was more about them as a couple and less about a New Orleans sex cult.
We're all stuck inside during these time, so I would recommend giving this film a try. This is one of the few films that lost its chance to be wide released and was shuffled to Netflix. We don't often see leads in comedy films like Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, so support this film and give it a try.
